Deacs Ready to Start West Coast Swing at Stanford Thursday

The Demon Deacons are looking to improve to 3-2 in conference play for the first time since the 2019-20 season when they play at Stanford for the first time in program history Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the Wake Forest women's basketball team travels to Stanford for the first time in the series history with tipoff scheduled for 10 p.m. (ET) at Maples Pavilion.
 
The Demon Deacons (12-4, 2-2 ACC) are off to their best start in 15 years and are looking to have their best start to conference play since the 2019-20 season when the Deacs started ACC play 3-2. In the first 16 games, they have been propelled by 18.4 assists per game which ranks 22nd in the country and second in the ACC. The Deacs have had the emergence of sophomore forward Grace Oliver as she is averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game and also ranking eighth nationally with 64.1 percent shooting from the floor which ranks second in the ACC. Going into Thursday, the Deacs ranked 16th nationally and first in the ACC, holding opponents to just 34.7 shooting from the field and also ranking 41st in scoring defense with just 56.6 points per game allowed while also ranking 43rd with 28.8 defensive rebounds per game.
 
The Cardinal (13-3, 2-1 ACC) is No. 33 in the NET rankings through games as of Jan. 6 and has played the nation's 22nd-toughest schedule. Stanford, Louisville and Syracuse are the only ACC schools with multiple non-conference wins against Power 4 opponents with the Cardinals wins coming over Oregon and Washington. Junior forward Courtney Ogden has been playing well in the last six games, averaging 17.5 points on 57.5 percent shooting, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals. Freshman forward Lara Somfai has won multiple ACC Freshman of the Week honors so far this season, averaging 10.9 points and 9.9 rebounds, just one of three freshmen nationally to have those numbers. As a team, the Cardinal rank eighth nationally and lead the ACC with a 79.1 free throw percentage.
 
Tipoff for Thursday is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. (ET) at Maples Pavilion.

Defensive Deacs
Wake Forest has remained a top competitor defensively well into the season, both nationally and in the ACC. Through 16 games, the Demon Deacons sit second in the conference, allowing 56.6 points per game and close behind the top teams. 
 
Additionally, the Deacs rank first in the ACC and 16th in the nation with a 34.7 field goal percentage defense.

Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 19 total assists on the night on 24 made baskets (79.2 percent). In 16 games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 295 assists on 410 field goals (72.0 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era. In the last two games, Wake Forest has tallied 53 assists and over the course of the season, the Demon Deacons are averaging 18.4 assists per game, second in the ACC behind Virginia's 19.4.

The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.

In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent). 

Forcing Them Over 
The Deacs forced the Orange into 10 turnovers on Sunday, and have forced 10 or more takeaways 83 times in the last 87 games, a stretch dating back to January of 2022.
 
Through 16 games, the Demon Deacons have forced 15.2 turnovers per game.
 
Owning the Paint
The Demon Deacons had another excellent game in the paint, with 42 points posted inside, while allowing Syracuse to score 36 points inside, a six-point differential. 
 
Across 16 games, the Deacs have totaled 528 points in the paint (35.6 per game).
 
Sharpshooting Deacs 
In two of the last three games, Wake Forest hit double-digit threes, knocking down 10 against Pitt after having a season-high 11 threes against Gardner-Webb in the non-conference finale. So far this season, the Demon Deacons have knocked down 95 threes (6.3 3FG per game).
 
The Deacs finished the 2024-25 season knocking down 159 threes (5.5 3FGM per game). This included seven games with eight or more threes made. 
 
Through the first three seasons under head coach Megan Gebbia, the Demon Deacons have hit 590 threes in 95 games under her direction (6.2 3FGM per game).

  • For the third-straight game, the Demon Deacons were led offensively by sophomore forward Grace Oliver who finished the night with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. In the past three games, the Norwell, Mass.-native has played some of her best basketball of the season, shooting an eye-popping 82.8 percent from the field and averaging 21.0 points per game.
  • In addition to Oliver, freshman guard Caitlyn Jones posted her fifth double-digit scoring game of the season and first since Georgetown on Dec. 7. Shooting 5-of-7 from the field, Jones totaled 10 points while also having three rebounds and three assists on the afternoon. 
  • Freshman guard Milan Brown recorded another game of double-digit rebounds, as she led the Deacs with 10. So far this season, Brown leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.

  • Individually, senior guard Elise Williams led the Demon Deacons in points (19), assists (4), rebounds (5) and steals (6). Her 19 points and six steals both set a season-high. 
    • Since returning from injury, Williams is averaging 16.0 points per game and has now scored at least 10 points in all four games since her return. Additionally, it marked the first time this season a Demon Deacon has recorded four or more assists without a giveaway and the second time in her career she did so.
  • Senior guard Raegyn Conley set career-highs in points (18) and three-pointers (6-of-10) off of the bench. It marked the first time in the HerHoopsStats era that a Demon Deacon has made at least six three pointers on 60 percent or better shooting from deep.
