The Demon Deacons captured the team title by six strokes, while junior Tom Haberer picked up his first collegiate win.
HUMACAO, P.R. – For the third time this season, the Wake Forest men's golf team was crowned team champions at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday.
This was the 49th win under the direction of head coach Jerry Haas.
As a team, the Deacs finished the Palmas del Mar Collegiate in first place, with a final score of 838 (-26). Five Demon Deacons finished in the top-25, while Wake Forest led the tournament in birdies, carding a total of 66 over three rounds. The Deacs shot the low round in the 14-team field on the last day of the tournament, going 13-under par as a team.
Junior Tom Haberer claimed his first collegiate title by two strokes with a score of 203 (-13), tying for the eighth lowest 54-hole score to par in program history. Haberer's win was highlighted by three under-par rounds, including a low five-under 67 in round two, tallying 17 birdies and carding just four bogeys over three rounds.
Nicholas Prieto claimed a runner-up finish, marking his fourth top-five finish of his junior season. Prieto shot his best in round three, carding a career-low 67 (-5). Senior Jakob Melin grabbed a top-25 finish closing out the tournament at even-par.
Sophomore Jorge Hao shot his best in the final round, ultimately leading the Deacs to victory with a final-round 69 (-3) to tie for 23rd.
Playing as an individual, senior Boyd Owens shot back-to-back under-par rounds to pick up a season-best finish, tying for 16th at four-under.
Up Next
The Deacs will head out west to California for The Prestige, hosted by UC Davis, from February 16-February 18.
From Coach Haas:
"We've only played 29 holes of golf this spring and haven't seen much grass due to the weather, but what a great testament to the ability of this Wake Forest golf team. This is the third win for these guys this season, and shooting 26 under is very impressive coming out of the gate. Congratulations to Tom Haberer getting his first win as a Demon Deacon. Also to Nick Prieto for his runner-up finish. They carried us to victory this week. There are lots of good things ahead for this team. What a great day to win seeing that it's Arnold Palmer Umbrella Day. Go Deacs!"
