LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Wake Forest track and field team opened its postseason schedule for the outdoor season at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park, highlighted by sophomore Rosalind Gergely claiming the ACC title in the women's javelin.
Gergely recorded a throw of 52.19 meters on her first attempt to secure first place and earn First Team All-ACC honors. This marked the Pottsville, Pa., native's second All-ACC honor of her career after previously earning Second Team All-ACC honors with a fifth-place finish in the women's javelin when the Demon Deacons hosted the meet last season.
With the result, Gergely has now placed first in five of the six meets she has competed in this season, including breaking the meet and facility record with a personal-best throw of 52.99 meters during the Wake Forest Invitational. She also ranks third all-time in Wake Forest history in the women's javelin.
Junior Angelina Perez continued her stellar season as she finished runner-up in the women's 10,000 meters. Perez ended the race with a personal-best time of 32:44.58 to earn First Team All-ACC honors, while also breaking her own school record in the event by over a second.
Three other Demon Deacons garnered All-ACC honors on Thursday, including a pair in the men's 10,000 meters. Senior Daniel Winter came from behind to clock 29:41.48 for a fifth-place finish, while junior Charlie Sprott finished right behind in sixth place at 29:42.79.
Meanwhile, graduate student Nick Masterman added a sixth-place finish in the men's javelin, registering a throw of 61.37 meters on his first attempt to earn Second Team All-ACC honors.
Additionally, three Deacs secured spots in the finals of the men's 1500 meters, with junior Rocky Hansen leading the way after posting the top preliminary-round time of 3:39.41. Sophomore Wes Shipsey booked his spot into the final after clocking a personal-best time of 3:40.48, moving him into eighth all-time in program history. Meanwhile, senior Bryce Gilmore earned the final at-large bid as he crossed the finish line in 3:42.11.
On the women's side, senior Elizabeth Whaley earned automatic qualification into the women's 1500-meter final as she posted a time of 4:11.34, the second-fastest time in the qualifying round.
Elsewhere, junior Seren Rodgers and freshman Julia Aere concluded their first day of competition in the women's heptathlon, with both competitors finishing the day inside the top-10.
Rodgers tallied 3,281 points to push her into third through the first four events, highlighted by a first-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles. The Taunton, England, native crossed the line in a personal-best time of 13.89 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in program history.

"What a tremendous first day for the Deacs! It went about as well as it could have gone. We have a great group that is motivated to be the best and it showed. My staff is working hard to make sure we continue the momentum into Friday and Saturday. It's always great to open an ACC Championship with a conference champion. Rosa [Gergely] really stepped up! She's had incredible consistency this season and there's plenty more to come. Angelina [Perez] finishing second in under the previous meet record was fun to watch. We had two men – Daniel [Winter] and Charlie [Sprott] score in the 10,000 meters and Joe [O'Brien] just missed out. Nick [Masterman] has been great in his short time with us. He finished sixth in the men's javelin. What a great year for him. Rocky [Hansen], Wes [Shipsey] and Bryce [Gilmore] ran well to advance in the men's 1500 meters, with true-freshman Landon [Pretre] falling .02 seconds short of advancing. Elizabeth [Whaley] ran a brave race after setting a tough pace to advance in the women's 1500 meters. Both of our heptathletes, Seren [Rodgers] and Julia [Aere] are in scoring position and both are poised to set big personal bests. We still have a lot of work to do but I'm optimistic we will finish strong!" - Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes
