Demon Deacons Secure Series at Duke with 10th Straight Win
5/15/2026 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
The win marks the first time since the 2002 season that Wake Forest has had two double-digit win streaks in the same season.
The bottom of the order for the Demon Deacons made the difference as Wake's six through nine hitters combined to go 5-for-13 with four doubles and four of six RBIs for the squad.
Junior Boston Torres extended his hit streak to 12 games with a second inning double, marking the longest streak for a Demon Deacon this season. The junior added another double later in the game, and now has five doubles in the last four games for Wake Forest.
Freshman Andrew Costello had an RBI single out of the seven spot in the lineup, while the middle infield duo of JD Stein and Blake Schaaf each added an RBI double.
Additionally, in the cleanup spot, sophomore Dalton Wentz recorded his 17th multi-hit game with a pair of singles, while pinch hitter Jimmy Keenan launched the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning over the wall in left field for his fifth home run of the year.
Starting pitcher Troy Dressler was effective over 4.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Freshman Marcelo Harsch continued a dominant run for the Wake Forest bullpen, tossing 3.1 no-hit innings, including a strikeout and a pair of double plays.
Sophomore Rhys Bowie tossed the final 1.2 innings with four strikeouts. During the 10-game win streak, Bowie has yet to allow a run in 10.0 innings with 19 strikeouts across five appearances.
Wake Forest turned a season-high four double plays in the contest, aided by three different batter interference calls on Duke hitters, while allowing four hits or fewer as a pitching staff for the 13th time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Demon Deacons defense was active in the bottom of the first, as starting pitcher Troy Dressler struck out his first batter, before a Duke player was caught stealing.
- Wake was able to get on the board with a pair of hits in the top of the second.
- Sophomore Matt Conte was the first Deac to notch a hit, lining a double to left field.
- Junior Boston Torres immediately followed with a double of his own, bringing Conte around to home plate.
- Dressler struck out two more in the bottom of the second for another scoreless frame.
- After two quick outs, Dressler worked around a pair of walks to keep the lead at 1-0 through three innings of play.
- Wake Forest added three runs in the top of the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
- Torres placed his second double of the game down the line in left field with one away to get things started in the inning.
- Freshman Andrew Costello battled in an 0-2 count, with a single back up the middle to plate Torres and double the lead.
- After a stolen base and wild pitch moved Costello to third base, junior Blake Schaaf doubled to left-center to extend the Demon Deacons advantage.
- Shortstop JD Stein swapped places with Schaaf on the third double of the inning to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
- The Blue Devils made it 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning.
- Freshman Marcelo Harsch relieved Dressler in the fifth, using a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning unharmed.
- After walks loaded the bases full of Demon Deacons, third baseman Dalton Wentz came through with a two-out single to right field to drive in a run and make it 5-2.
- Harsch needed just four pitches to get through the bottom of the sixth for a shutdown inning.
- Wake Forest turned its fourth double play of the game for a scoreless frame in the seventh.
- The Demon Deacons added a run on Duke's sixth error of the series in the eighth.
- Sophomore Rhys Bowie recorded a pair of strikeouts looking to keep the Blue Devils off the board for the fourth straight inning.
- Pinch hitter Jimmy Keenan launched a solo home run on the first pitch he saw to pad the lead.
- Bowie added two more strikeouts in the ninth to slam the door on the series win for the Demon Deacons.

FROM COACH WALTER
"That's a good win. Anytime, your top three hitters go 0-fer and you can find a way to win, it's a good day. It just speaks to the balance in our lineup that we've had recently. Our bullpen's been fantastic here lately and guys are starting to figure out who they are and what their roles are. They're thriving in these roles, being mature and getting older. I'm really happy with our bullpen, the balance, and how our lineup is finding ways to score. Sometimes, you have to win ugly, and, you know, we've won these two first games ugly. It was good to see us hit our first homer this series. It's good to score runs – you can't be dependent on the home run in the postseason. So, it's good to score and be able to hit the ball." - Head Coach Tom Walter
