Demon Deacons to Battle Virginia at Spry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team returns home Saturday night as the Demon Deacons welcome Virginia to Spry Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff during Alumni Weekend.

The Demon Deacons enter Saturday's matchup with a 4-2-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in ACC play following a tight battle at Virginia Tech on Sunday. Wake Forest opened conference play with a commanding 6-1 victory over Duke before earning a 3-0 win over USC Upstate last Tuesday.

Wake Forest has scored 15 goals through its first seven matches while allowing just six. The Deacs' balanced attack has featured 10 different goal scorers and 13 different players with an assist. Tate Lorentz leads the squad with seven points on two goals and three assists, while Jeffrey White and Joel Torbic are tied for second with six points apiece.

In goal, Jonah Mednard has started all seven matches and has made 24 saves while posting a .800 save percentage, ranking third and first in the conference, respectively. He has also helped Wake Forest record three clean sheets this season.

MATCHUP NOTES

This will mark the 66th meeting between the two programs with Virginia leading the all-time series, 41-15-9.
- Under head coach Bobby Muuss, the Deacs hold a 4-5-2 record against the Cavaliers with a plus-two goal differential.
The two sides have met three times since the start of 2024, including a matchup in the ACC semifinals where the Demon Deacons defeated the Cavaliers, 5-1, en route to the ACC Championship.
- Joel Torbic scored his first-collegiate goal in the ACC tournament victory and he enters Saturday with two goals and two assists on the season.
Muuss enters the match with a 59-18-16 record in ACC play since 2015, the most regular season conference wins in the country during that span.
Wake Forest is 3-0-1 at Spry Stadium this season and has scored 13 goals across those four home matches with just three conceded.

RECENT FORM

Wake Forest enters Saturday with a 4-2-1 overall record and 1-1 mark in ACC play.
The Demon Deacons opened ACC play with their largest offensive performance against Duke in series history, scoring six goals in a 6-1 victory on Sept. 5.
Wake Forest followed the Duke victory with a 3-0 shutout of USC Upstate, controlling 67 percent of possession while holding an 18-6 advantage in shots.
The Deacs then dropped a 2-1 decision at Virginia Tech on Sunday, with Alfred Debah scoring Wake Forest's lone goal.
Mason Sullivan and Joel Torbic both scored in consecutive matches against Duke and USC Upstate.
- Torbic recorded a goal and an assist in each of those two matches, totaling six points over the two-game span.
Wake Forest has scored at least three goals in four of its seven matches this season and has scored 15 total goals via 10 different scorers.

SENIOR DYNAMIC DUO

Seniors Tate Lorentz and Jeffrey White continue to headline a balanced Wake Forest attack.
Lorentz leads the team with seven points on two goals and three assists, while White has six points on two goals and two assists.
The duo has combined for four goals and four assists through seven matches, with both recording a brace during the opening portion of the season.
They were instrumental in Wake Forest's 6-1 victory over Duke, with Lorentz scoring twice and White recording two assists.
Lorentz enters Saturday with eight goals, eight assists and 24 career points at Wake Forest, while White has six goals, seven assists and 19 career points.

DEFENSIVE SOLIDARITY

Wake Forest has allowed just six goals through seven matches and owns a 0.86 goals-against average.
Jonah Mednard has started every match in goal, making 24 saves while posting an .800 save percentage, both rank top three in the ACC.
Mednard has also recorded two individual clean sheets and combined with Quinn Syrett for another against USC Upstate.
Daniel Krueger and Mason Sullivan continue to anchor the back line, with Krueger leading all Wake Forest outfield players in minutes (554) and Sullivan (539) ranking second.
Wake Forest has limited opponents to 94 shots through seven matches, allowing just 34 attempts on goal.

SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS

Virginia enters Saturday with a 3-3-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in ACC play. The Cavaliers have won their last two matches, defeating Boston College, 2-0, in their ACC opener before earning a 3-2 victory over Liberty.
- The Cavaliers have scored 14 goals through seven matches while allowing 10.
AJ Smith leads Virginia with nine points on four goals and one assist, including a two-goal performance against Liberty, while Brendan Lambe has eight points on two goals and four assists.
- Marco Dos Santos has also contributed two goals for the Cavaliers this season.
In goal, minutes have been split between Spencer Sanderson (1.75 GAA through four games) and Caleb Tunks (1.00 GAA through three games).
Virginia is led by longtime head coach George Gelnovatch, who is in his 31st season at the helm of the Cavaliers.

Named the fourth head coach in program history prior to the start of the 2015 season, Bobby Muuss has guided Wake Forest to sustained success over the last 12 seasons.
Since the start of the 2015 season, Wake Forest has collected 163 wins, tied for the most in NCAA Division I men's soccer with Indiana. Clemson ranks third with 153, followed by Georgetown (151) and Stanford (146).
