Taylor Hurst enters his second year as volunteer assistant coach in the 2016-17 season.
During the 2015-2016, he aided the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs, in both coaching and recruiting. He helped coach Samantha Jones to a sixth-place finish at the ACC Championship, which was the Deacons' best individual finish at a conference championship meet since 2010. Jones went on to garner All-ACC honors, All-Region honors and was an individual qualifier for the NCAA Division I Championships in Louisville, Ky. Samantha Jones and Ellie Abrahamson were also named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Team under Hurst.
The Demon Deacons distance men and women recorded four All-ACC honors (800m, 1500m, 5k) during the 2016 season. Robert Heppenstall finished the indoor and outdoor season with ACC Outdoor Track and Field Academic Team honors and All-American honors in the 800m.
Prior to Joining the Demon Deacons, Hurst was assistant cross country/track and field coach at North Texas. During the 2014-2015 seasons, he aided the Mean Green Cross Country men’s team to its first Conference USA Championship, and the women to a third-place finish. Ten North Texas runners received all-conference individual honors. At the 2014 NCAA South Central Regional Championships, the men’s team finished fourth and the women’s team placed eighth. Guided by Hurst, Troy Taylor placed eighth in the men’s 10K race, allowing him to compete in the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. The Mean Green distance men recorded six top-eight finishes at the 2014 C-USA Indoor Championships, while the women's side grabbed two runner-up finishes and an additional top-six finish.
At the C-USA Outdoor Championships three athletes earned All-Conference honors placing in the top three in their events while two additional athletes scored team points in their events with top 8 finishes. Troy Taylor and Charlotte Wilson went on to represent Mean Green distance at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round. Taylor competed in the men's 1500m while Wilson competed in the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Wilson also recorded the 5th fastest women's 3,000m steeplechase run by any female Australian athlete during 2014 with a time of 10:13.10.
In his undergraduate career, Hurst competed for University of North Carolina at Greensboro in both cross country and track & field. Throughout his collegiate career, Hurst earned All-Southern Conference honors twice in the 800m, once as a sophomore (Indoors) and once as a senior (Outdoors). Hurst was a four-time letter winner in both cross country and track and was a part of UNCG's first Southern Conference Championship in 2011.
Hurst graduated from UNCG in August 2012 with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in history. A native of Atlanta, Ga., he is the son of Gary and Patricia Hurst, and has one older brother, Mitchell and a younger sister, Jordan.
