Last Time Out
Wake Forest continued its postseason slate with a stellar performance at the NCAA East Region First Round in Lexington, Ky.
Overall, four Demon Deacons qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including three on the women's side, the most since the Demon Deacons qualified four in 2005. Additionally, the Deacs have now qualified at least one athlete for the NCAA Championships in each of the last six seasons dating back to 2021.
Juniors Angelina Perez and Brooke Wilson kicked things off for the Demon Deacons by earning their first career appearances at the NCAA Championships in the women's 10,000 meters. Wilson led the way for the Deacs as she powered her way through the field over the final five laps to secure an 11th-place finish in the semifinal round, crossing the line in 33:18.61. Meanwhile, Perez finished right behind Wilson, clocking a time of 33:19.56 to secure 12th place and the final qualifying spot.
Meanwhile, senior Elizabeth Whaley secured her spot in the semifinal of the women's 1500 meters on the final day of competition after placing third in her quarterfinal heat with a time of 4:11.85.
On the men's side, junior Rocky Hansen cruised to his third consecutive appearance in the men's 5000 meter final after securing a second-place finish in his semifinal heat, posting a time of 13:28.19.
Last Year at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Wake Forest recorded a strong performance during the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, highlighted by four Deacs earning All-American honors.
Hansen led the way for the Demon Deacons as he earned First Team All-American honors after securing a fifth-place finish in the men's 5000 meters, recording a time of 13:22.47. This marked the Hendersonville, N.C., native's second All-American honor of his career, having previously earned Second Team All-American honors in 2024.
Luke Tewalt and JoJo Jourdon also earned All-American honors in the men's 5000 meters, with Tewalt claiming Second Team All-American honors after placing 14th, while Jourdon finished in 18th place to claim All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Meanwhile, Rynard Swanepoel concluded his collegiate career by recording a 13th-place finish in the semifinal of the men's 800 meters to secure Second Team All-American honors.
The John Hayes Era
Currently in his 10th season as the director of the Wake Forest track and cross country programs, head coach John Hayes has helped the Demon Deacons rise to the highest ranks in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Under his leadership, the Deacs have claimed two ACC championships in men's cross country over the past three seasons, including their most recent title during the 2024 season. The men's cross country team has also finished inside the top-10 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships three times during Hayes' tenure, including a seventh-place finish in 2024 and a fifth-place finish in 2022. Hayes, who was named both Southeast Region and ACC Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2024, has also produced seven All-Americans in cross country, including junior Rocky Hansen, who finished as national runner-up at the 2025 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Along with his achievements in cross country, Hayes has also helped guide the Deacs into success in both indoor and outdoor track and field. In outdoor track and field alone, the Deacs have earned 78 All-ACC honors under Hayes, as well as individual ACC championships by Thomas Vanoppen in the 1500m back in 2022 and Rosalind Gergely in the women's javelin this season.
