Hayden Wagner joined the Wake Forest volleyball staff in summer 2023, taking on the role as an assistant coach.

Wagner arrived at Winston-Salem following a stint at Illinois State University, where he worked as an assistant coach for the Redbirds’ volleyball team during the 2022-23 campaign. The York, Pennsylvania, native’s duties involved film sessions with student-athletes, handling statistics, instructing during group practices, and managing members of ISU’s support staff.


Prior to his time in Normal, Illinois, Wagner acted as a volunteer assistant coach within the University of Cincinnati’s volleyball program in 2021-22. He was a critical factor in the Bearcats’ operational support in a behind-the-scenes fashion, while also overseeing complex technology and data. Wagner additionally provided assistance to support staff individuals and aided in match day preparation by assisting in drills.


From February to May 2022, Wagner led the Ohio Premier Volleyball Club 15-1 women’s team as a head coach. In addition to his construction of practice plans and schedule coordination, he also placed an emphasis on mentorship through both one-on-one sessions and large groups for team members.


A graduate of George Mason University, Wagner was a standout player for the Patriots’ men’s volleyball team, earning NCAA Division I All-American honorable mention honors three times (2018-19, 2021). Wagner also was named to the AVCA All-America honorable mention and All-EIVA First Team lists on two separate occasions. He recorded career totals of 979 kills, 282 digs and 99 service aces throughout his collegiate tenure. Wagner’s final year saw him lead George Mason in kills (225), kills-per-set average (3.88) and service aces (23), placing ninth all-time in program history for the latter.


Wagner obtained a Bachelor of Arts Integrative Studies, holding a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Development, in May 2020. A year later, he earned a graduate certificate in coaching.
