"Volleyball has always been a huge part of my life and I'm excited to turn this passion into a profession at the next level," Martincich said. "I've been blessed with so many great coaches and mentors throughout my athletic career who have really helped to shape my life. I hope to have the same impact as a coach at the collegiate level at Wake Forest."
Martincich will work primarily with the Wake Forest setters. The Demon Deacons return Sophia Dodd from last year's team. She averaged 6.85 assists per set and finished with 97 digs during the 2014 season.
As a coach with Kansas City Power Volleyball Club, Martincich took each of her teams to the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Tournament. During her career with KC Power, Martincich coached in the 15-, 16-, 17- and 18-year old age group.
With KC Power, Martincich helped the progression of multiple players that have gone on to play at the Division I level, including Madison Duello at Wisconsin, Taylor Migliazzo at Oklahoma and Shelby Workman at Kentucky. She's also coached players that have gone on to play at UMKC, Nebraska-Omaha and Regis (Colo.).
As a setter and defensive specialist for the Jayhawks from 2006-09, Martincich was named the Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year for 2007-08 while being a KU Women of Distinction recipient in 2009. Coupled with her success in the classroom, she earned Big 12 Academic First Team distinction in 2006, 2007 and 2008 while earning ESPN The Magazine's Third Team All-District Academic team honors. Prior to joining Kansas, Martincich led Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee, Kansas, to three 5A championships in a row while earning Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year for the state of Kansas in 2005.
A graduate of the University of Kansas, Martincich earned a bachelor's degree in Business Marketing in December 2009 before completing her master's degree in Psychology of Health & Exercise in May 2013. She finished her undergrad with a 3.98 grade point average and completed her master's degree with a 3.93 GPA.
"I have coached Katie in the past, so I know what she's all about and she knows how our program operates," Murczek said. "I'm very excited about her joining our staff. Katie is going to be someone that will bring a great, new perspective to the program's dynamic. I think she's going to do a wonderful job here at Wake Forest."
Outside of volleyball, Martincich spent time with MBB+ (Muller, Bressler, and Brown) advertising agency, Kansas Athletics in student-athlete support services and Cerner Corporation. She has also been a consistent volunteer at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
