WINSTON-SALEM, NC - First baseman Jon Palmieri went 4-for-5 with four RBI and Scott Daeley, Jason Aquilante and Andrew Riepe each had three hits to lead Wake Forest past Virginia, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, the Demon Deacons' 14th straight at home and second straight in the series, Wake Forest's record improves to 23-10 overall and 8-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia drops to 15-22 and 5-8 in league play.
Wake Forest starter John Hendricks (5-4) picked up the victory after allowing four earned runs and scattering 12 hits in seven innings of work. It was a historic day for Hendricks, as he tied a school record with his 29th career victory and set a new school mark with his 279th career strikeout. Palmieri also participated in the Wake Forest record rewriting as he belted two doubles to become the school's all-time leader in that department with 72.
Virginia's Brandon Creswell (5-4) took the loss after surrendering 11 runs in 5 2/3 innings, although only five of those runs were earned as the Cavalier defense committed six errors on the afternoon.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Cavs tied the score with two runs in the third and then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a solo home run from Tim LaVigne, his second of the season.
Wake Forest put the game away with four runs in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth to take a 11-4 lead. The Deacons stretched the lead to 14-5 after eight innings before Dan Street hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth inning to make the score 14-8. Daeley and Aquilante each went 3-for-4 in the game while Riepe finished 3-for-5. Riepe and Aquilante each drove in two runs in the game for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest and Virginia will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem. The game will be televised regionally on the ACC TV Network (Fox Sports South, Home Team Sports and Sunshine Network.)
