Duke, WFU in ACC Singles Final

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Second seeded Vanessa Webb of Duke faces number one seed Mariel Verban of Wake Forest in the ACC Indoor Tennis Singles Championshhips Monday. In the doubles draw, Webb and Karen Goldstein of Duke face teammates Megan Miller and Kathy Sell for the championship. North Carolina's Courtney Zalinski faces Duke's Kathy Sell in the singles consolation final. Both Webb and Verban won their semi-final matches in straight sets, and gave up only nine games total. Webb earned a finals berth after defeating Duke's Kristin Sanderson 6-2, 6-2. Verban gave up one more game than Webb before defeating Duke's Megan Miller 6-2, 6-3.
In semi-final doubles action, the number one seeded team of Goldstein and Webb defeated Duke's Erica Biro and Kristin Sanderson 8-3. Miller and Sell advanced to the final after defeating Wake Forest's Janet Bergman and Maren Haus in a tie-break pro-set 9-8 (3). Miller and Sell were the second seeded doubles team coming into the tournament.
After losing her first round match in the main draw, North Carolina sophomore Courtney Zalinski advanced to the finals of consolation singles after defeating Wake Forest's Jackie Houston 6-2, 7-5. Sell advanced after defeating Amy O'Donnell of Virginia 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Final matches in the ACC Indoor Championships start at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
