Miami defeats Wake Forest in its ACC home opener.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest (7-7, 0-3 ACC) fell, 4-1, to No. 38 Miami (6-2, 3-0 ACC) on Friday night. The Demon Deacons battled hard in doubles but fell in a tiebreaker to decide the point. Evie Oxford was able to earn a singles win for the Deacs, but Miami wrapped the match up with three singles wins. This is the first of Wake Forest's two-match weekend against Sunshine State opponents; the Deacs will play Florida State (4-8) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
As has been the trend the last few matches, the doubles session came down to a tight finish for the tiebreaker. After Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum made quick work of the 'Canes' top duo, Miami's Sofia Rocchetti and Sebastianna Scilipoti fired back with a 6-1 win over Oxford and Sankavi Gownder to level it. Krystal Blanch and Aubrey Nisbet fought until the end, but could not defeat Maria Vargas and Daria Volosova. Miami earned the doubles point with a win on court three.
In singles, Miami got out to a one-set lead in five of the six matches. Oxford was the exception, and she went on to win her match, 6-3, 6-3, to earn her tenth singles victory of the season. She is the first Demon Deacon to reach that mark. Blanch, Carton and Tannenbaum would suffer defeats as the 'Canes clinched the match.

How it Happened
"Well played match tonight. Tough losing the doubles point in a tiebreaker when we really needed that point to give ourselves a chance. Great job by Nev and Kady in the doubles, and Evie was great in her singles. They were really good at the top of the lineup, so credit to them. It isn't easy beating our top three in straight sets on our home courts. It will be a big match for both us and Florida State on Sunday. Looking forward to that next opportunity.
Up Next
Wake Forest will take on Florida State on Sunday, March 8, at 11 a.m. Both squads are still looking for their first ACC win of the season. The Deacs will be out for revenge, as the 'Noles won in Tallahassee last season.
