WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Nienke van Ruiten scored two goals to lead the Demon Deacons to a 3-0 upset of 10th-ranked Kent State on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 3-4 on the season while Kent State falls to 5-2.
Wake Forest broke a scoreless tie with 5:39 remaining in the first half when Lisa Andries scored off a pass from Amy Marchell. The Deacs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Van Ruiten gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead with 18:40 remaining in the second half when she scored off a set play from a penalty corner. She was assisted by Amanda Janney and Andries on the play. Van Ruiten put the game away with just 2:57 remaining in the second half with her second goal of the afternoon, assisted by Jennie Shelton. Wake Forest goalkeeper Meaghan Nitka was brilliant all afternoon, making 17 saves to record her first shutout of the season. Kent State goalkeeper Jodi Lume made 11 saves for the Golden Flash. The Demon Deacons outshot Kent State 26 to 21 in the game.
Wake Forest will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when the Demon Deacons host Appalachian State at 7:30 p.m. in Kentner Stadium.
