DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C.--The Wake Forest men's golf team recorded a first-round team score of 296, or 8-over-par, to stand in 13th place after the first round of the NCAA Division I East Regional. The top 11 teams and two individuals at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 27-30 in Albuquerque, NM.
The Demon Deacons are 16 strokes back of the team leader, Clemson, who shot an 8-under score of 280 in the first round. Wake stands just three strokes behind East Tennessee State, Louisiana State, and Florida State, who are in a tie for 10th place at 5-over.
Individually, Georgia Tech sophomore and U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar took an early lead with an 8-under 64 in the first round of play. Junior Michael Capone was Wake's top finisher on the day, shooting an even-par 72 to stand tied for 23rd place. Senior Ryan Gioffre and junior Juan Vizcaya both carded 74's and are tied for 50th at 2-over par. Senior Ray Floyd, Jr. shot a 76 and is tied for 76th, while senior Todd Lynch tallied a 77 and is tied for 86th.
Play continues Friday and Saturday, beginning at 8:00 am, on the par-72, 7,081-yard Melrose Course at Daufuskie Island near Hilton Head, S.C.
