The BellSouth Yellow Pages Intercollegiate
Wake Forest is back in action this Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, at the
BellSouth Yellow Pages Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will be
contested at the MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, NC, and features a
strong 12-team field. Six teams in the field are currently ranked in the
Mastercard Top 20, including No. 1 Clemson and No. 3 (and defending
national champion) UNLV. In last year's BellSouth, the Deacons made a
furious rally but fell just one stroke short of the team title, finishing
in second place behind UNLV.

Last Time Out
Paced by the outstanding play of senior Michael Capone, Wake Forest earned
a sixth-place finish in a strong 18-team field at the Carpet Capital
Classic last week in Dalton, Ga. Capone fired a career-low 66 in the
opening round, and followed with a 72 and a 74 to finish with a
career-low-tying 212 (-4). He was eight strokes behind individual titlist
Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech. Wake recorded a season-low 285 (-3) in the
first round, followed by an even-par 288 and a 19-over 307 in the final two
rounds. The Deacs were 22 strokes off of team champion Georgia (-6).
Senior Thomas Parker shot 74-71-78 to finish the event at 7-over, good for
40th place. Senior Juan Vizcaya (77-71-78) and junior Jamie Gallacher
(72-77-77) both finished 55th at 10-over, while senior Oscar Sanchez, who
won the event in 1997, was 66th at 12-over.
Head Coach Jerry Haas
Jerry Haas is in his second season as head coach of the Demon Deacons,
after having taken the reins of the Wake Forest program in September of
1997. A 1985 graduate of WFU and a four-time collegiate All-American, Haas
played nine years of professional golf, including four years on the PGA
Tour, before returning to his alma mater as a head coach.
