Verban Eliminated From Rolex Championships

DALLAS - Wake Forest's Mariel Verban (Bloomington, Ill.) was eliminated from the 1999 Rolex Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in the quarterfinal round this afternoon. Verban was defeated by Marissa Catlin from the University of Georgia in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. The tournament is being hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club.
Verban advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating Mississippi's Agnes Muzamel in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3 during a second round match earlier this morning.
Verban has an overall singles' record of 22-6 this season. She will begin the 1999 team season playing at the No. 1 flight position for the Deacons. Wake Forest will open its 1999 season against Tennessee on Feb. 13 in Knoxville.
