Virginia Tech Heads to Winston-Salem

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech will face the University of Richmond in the first round of the NCAA Baseball Regional to be held at Ernie Shore Field in Winston-Salem, N.C., May 28-30. The Hokies and Spiders are scheduled to square off Friday at 3 p.m., and host Wake Forest is slated to play Siena in the second game at 7 p.m.
The double-elimination event will feature three games on Saturday. The two losing teams from Friday's games will meet in game three on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the two winning teams will battle in game four at 3 p.m. The winner of game three and the loser of game four will play in an elimination game Saturday evening at 7. The championship contest is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Tech, which won the Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday, has a 41-15 record and is the No. 3 seed in the regional. Richmond, the No. 2 seed, has a 38-15 record. The two teams met once during the regular season with the Hokies winning 8-4 at Pitt Field on the UR campus.
Wake Forest, the top-seeded team in the regional, won the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and has an overall record of 44-13. Siena is 34-20 and seeded fourth.
Tech played Wake Forest three times during the season, losing all three meetings. The Demon Deacons defeated Tech by scores of 4-2 and 10-9 at Winston-Salem in February and took an 8-4 decision in Blacksburg on Apr. 6. Tech is 26-22 all-time against Wake and has a 60-65 overall record versus Richmond. The Hokies have never faced Siena in baseball.
The regional at Winston-Salem is one of 16 four-team regionals. The winners will advance to eight, two-team super regionals, June 4-6. The eight winners of the super regionals will play in the NCAA College World Series, June 11-19.
