Women's Golf Misses Cut at NCAA East Regionals

DURHAM, N.C.--The Wake Forest women's golf team struggled in the final round of play at the 1998 NCAA East Regional, missing the final eight-team cut for the NCAA Championships by just three strokes. The Deacons, who stood in fourth place after the first round and in seventh place heading into the final round, carded a score of 313 on Sunday, or 21-over par, to finish the event at 43-over. The last two teams to make the cut, North Carolina and Auburn, finished at 40-over par. Senior Alexandra Armas narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships, losing a one-hole playoff to Kentucky's Heather Kraus for one of the two individual spots. Armas stood in third place at 1-under par heading into the final round, but shot an 80 to finish in 15th place at 6-over-par.
Georgia finished first with a team score of 882 (+6), while the Bulldogs' Reilley Rankin was the individual medalist at 3-under par. Wake freshman Marta Prieto, the 1998 ACC Individual Champion, shot a 78 in the final round to finish tied for 38th at 12-over, along with sophomore Kelly Kirwin, who tallied a 76 today. Junior Kristen Wagner shot a 79 and finished 50th, while sophomore Kerri Murphy had an 82 and placed 74th.
The NCAA Championships will be played in two weeks at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI.
