NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated Brigham Young, 5-4, in the opening round of the NCAA Championship here Thursday to advance to the national quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
The Demon Deacons, who are appearing in their fifth straight NCAA tournament, had been beaten in the first round the past three years.
The win came when Wake's number-one doubles team of Nicola Kaiwai and Dorothee Kurz defeated BYU's Eline Chiew and Adrien Jenkins, 9-8, in the decisive match. The two teams had split six singles matches and the other two doubles matches.
Deacon singles winners were Lule Aydin at number-two, Kurz at number-four, and Jackie Houston at number-five. Annemarie Milton and Caroline Ullring also were victorious for WFU at number-three doubles.
For Aydin, the team's only senior, her singles win was the 100th of her career.
The victory boosted the 13th-ranked Deacons to 18-8 on the year. Wake will now face the winner of Tennessee and 2nd-ranked Stanford on Friday.
