Women's Tennis Wins Opener at National Indoors

MADISON, Wisc. -- The 13th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team won its opening round match at the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Team Tennis Championship. The Deacons scored a 6-3 victory over 10th-ranked Pepperdine and increased their mark on the season to 3-0.
Wake Forest relied on strong singles play to pull off the upset. Lule Aydin won a grueling match at No. 2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Mariel Verban surprised the 21st-ranked player in the country, Karoline Borgerson, at No. 3 and Annemarie Milton won impressively over Ahn Phong Nguyen (53rd in the nation) at No. 5. Dorothee Kurz won easily at No. 4.
The match was decided when Aydin and Verban won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-2. Wake Forest's standout team of Kurz and Nicola Kaiwai (ranked 6th in the nation) fell at No. 1 to the 2nd-ranked team of Zsofia Csapo and Angela Lawrence.
The Demon Deacons return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face the 5th-ranked team from Georgia at 2:30 p.m.
