ACC Men's Indoor Tennis Championships Ready to Begin

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Indoor Tennis Championships will be held at the Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem on Jan. 21-24. The tournament will begin Thursday at 3 p.m. with the first round of doubles competition. Single matches will begin on Friday morning at 8 a.m.
Among the competitors at this year's championships are Brian Vahaly of Virginia, Myles Clouston of Wake Forest and Doug Root of Duke. Vahaly is the tournament's top seed and ranked number two in the nation as a singles competitor by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Clouston and Root are also ranked among the country's top 50 players.
Florida State's Ty Braswell and N.C. State's Roberto Bracone are also ranked among the top 100 players in the country.
The Wake Forest duo of Raul Munoz and Clouston is the tournament's top doubles seed. Ranked 17th in the nation as a combo, Clouston and Munoz advanced to the finals of the National Clay Court Championships during the fall. The Blue Devil's Pedro Escudero and Root are seeded second.
All eight schools participating in the championship are ranked among the top 75 teams in America. Duke leads the ACC with a national ranking of 10th followed by Virginia (34), North Carolina (47), Georgia Tech (50), Clemson (52), Florida State (55), Wake Forest (58) and N.C. State (72).
The championship matches of both the singles and doubles tournament will be held on Sunday. Matches will begin at 8 a.m. each day starting on Friday.
