Deacons Get SMU in Opening Round of Blue-Gray Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest has been slated to take on the 10th ranked Mustangs of Southern Methodist University in the first round of the 1999 Blue-Gray Classic. The annual event is being held in Montgomery, AL.

The Deacons enter the match on a bit of a roll, as they have won four straight matches. After starting the season 0-4, Wake has won six of its past seven matches including an upset victory over the 17th ranked University of Florida Gators.

Leading the way for the Deacons is the nationally ranked doubles team of senior Myles Clouston and sophomore Raul Munoz. They are undefeated in dual match play this season, 9-0. Having won nine consecutive doubles matches, Clouston and Munoz have vaulted to a current national ranking of 14th. The duo is 17-4 overall this season. Clouston is ranked 35th as a singles competitor.

Also playing well entering the Blue-Gray Classic is freshman Justin Kaufmann. Kaufmann has won six consecutive matches while playing two different flight positions, No. 4 and No. 6. He hasn't lost a match since Feb. 13 at Illinois.

The Mustangs boast three of the nation's top 100 men's singles players, Ignacio Hlrigoyen of Argentina, Jon Wallmark of Sweden and Dustin Mauck of Bradenton, Fla. Hlrigoyen is ranked as 10th best collegiate player in the country.

The Deacons are 6-5 overall this season and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 4-3 victory over Florida State. Wake's match against SMU will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 18.
