WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The road to the College World Series begins at Ernie Shore Field this weekend for four conference champions as Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Richmond, and Siena square off in the 1999 NCAA Baseball Regional at Winston-Salem.
"We're very happy with the teams that we have coming in to the regional," said Wake Forest Head Coach George Greer. "The Virginia schools will bring some great fans. It should make for a very exciting weekend in Winston-Salem, and I think it would be great to have as many fans as possible out at Ernie Shore."
The Demon Deacons (44-13), who captured their second consecutive ACC Championship last weekend, earned the top seed in the regional and will face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Siena (34-20) on Friday, May 28th at 7:00 pm. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Atlantic-10 champion Virginia Tech (41-15) will meet Richmond (38-15), the regular-season champion of the Colonial Athletic Association, in the first game on Friday at 3:00 pm. The double-elimination format features three games on Saturday at 11:00 am, 3:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. The regional champion will be decided on Sunday with a game at 1:00 pm, and, if necessary, a second game at 6:00 pm.

"Siena is a very good ballclub and they play in a good conference, although their conference doesn't get a whole lot of respect," said Greer. "They're very sound fundamentally and they have some good pitching. Our players are very confident right now. We've won quite a few games, and we've beaten some great teams along the way. We've played a very strong schedule, as noted in our RPI, which was third in the nation. So we're ready to play anybody they throw against us, and let's just see what happens."
The winners of the 16 regional tournaments will advance to eight Super Regionals for the chance to earn a berth to the College World Series. Should the Deacons win the regional in Winston-Salem, they would most likely face the nation's No. 1 seed, Miami, who is also hosting a regional tournament this weekend.
Tickets for the three-day event are $7 per game for adults and $3 per game for children and students. Tournament ticket packages are also available at $30 for adults and $10 for children and students. For information, call the Wake Forest ticket office at (888) 758-DEAC.
