Deacon Details
Last Time Out
Wake Forest struggled to a 309 in the final round of play to finish 12th
out of 15 teams at the Chris Schenkel E-Z-GO Intercollegiate, held at the
Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga. Top-ranked Clemson earned
the team title by virtue of a playoff with Georgia, after both teams
finished with team scores of 869, or 5-over-par. The Deacs carded a
54-hole mark of 902, or 38-over. Senior Michael Capone was just one stroke
out of the lead after shooting 71-69 in the first two rounds, but carded a
78 on the final 18 to finish in a tie for 10th place at 218 (+2). He was
seven strokes back of the individual medalist, Steve Scott of Florida, who
recorded a 5-under 211. The rest of the Deacon lineup struggled, however.
Senior Oscar Sanchez finished tied for 52nd with a 54-hole total of 228
(+12), while senior Thomas Parker was 56th at 13-over. Freshman Jay Morgan
and senior Juan Vizcaya placed 62nd and 65th, finishing 16- and 17-over,
respectively.
Head Coach Jerry Haas
Jerry Haas is in his second season as head coach of the Demon Deacons,
after having taken the reins of the Wake Forest program in September of
1997. A 1985 graduate of WFU and a four-time collegiate All-American, Haas
played nine years of professional golf, including four years on the PGA
Tour, before returning to his alma mater as a head coach.
