WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Rick Phillipp has been named the recipient of the 1999 Bill Talbert National Junior Sportsmanship Award. Phillipp, a member of the Deacons' tennis team, was nominated by the Midwest Tennis Association for the selection process involving all 17 of the United States Tennis Association's sections.
Phillipp will receive his award at the 1999 International Tennis Hall of Fame ceremonies, which are being held July 9-11 in Newport, RI. This will coincide with ceremonies inducting John McEnroe into the Hall of Fame.
As a high school senior, Phillipp won the 1998 Indiana State Singles Championship. He was also a member of four Junior Davis Cup teams. Phillipp recorded his first collegiate dual match victory on March 25, 1999. He defeated Maryland's Jon Murchison in three sets: 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-2. Phillipp is 2-3 in dual match play this spring.
