WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest rising junior Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL) is one of six top American women's collegiate players named to the 1999 USA Tennis Collegiate Team, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced.
The USA Tennis Collegiate Team, an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players, is administered by the United States Tennis Association and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The players were chosen by a USTA and ITA Selection Committee with the following criteria: United States citizen, NCAA singles champion, dual match record, final ITA collegiate rankings, performance in ITA Collegiate Grand Slam, and sportsmanship.
Verban enjoyed a breakthrough season in 1999 as she reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals and earned ITA All-American honors. She ran up a 43-17 record this season while earning All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors. Verban finished the 1999 spring season ranked 4th in the nation among all American-born players.
The USA Tennis Collegiate Team participated in a five-day training session in June at the USTA Training Center in Key Biscayne, Fla. In addition to competing in USTA professional circuit events, members of the team will also participate in the ITA National Summer Championships presented by the USTA and hosted by William and Mary on Aug. 11-15. The men's and women's singles and doubles winners of the ITA National Summer Championships, the pinnacle of the ITA Summer Circuit, are given wild cards into the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament by the USTA.
Team members will also receive coaching at USA Tennis Circuit events, a travel grant for the summer and consideration for wild cards. The program is funded by the USTA.
Also named to the women's team were the following players: Marissa Catlin, Georgia; Ditta Huber, Southern California; Whitney Laiho, Florida; Marissa Irvin, Stanford; and Teryn Ashley, Stanford.
