WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Demon Deacon women's tennis team wrapped up competition on a successful note at their own Wake Forest Invitational, winning both the top singles and doubles titles. The three-day tournament featured collegiate players from seven different schools competing in four singles and two doubles brackets.
A Deacon victory was assured in the 'A' singles draw, as top-seeded Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, NY), a Wake Forest sophomore, won the match over teammate Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC). It was Bielik third singles title in as many events this fall, as she previously won the William & Mary Invitational and ITA National Clay Courts. Bergman, a junior, provided Bielik with her toughest competition so far this season, however, as she became the first competitor to win a set over Bielik. Bielik won 6-4 in the first, but Bergman took the second set 6-4, and the two battled back and forth in the third with Bielik emerging as the winner, 6-4.
Following their singles match, Bielik and Bergman teamed up to win the 'A' doubles draw, also their third doubles title in as many events this fall. The Deacon duo, ranked fifth nationally, topped Laura Garcia and Veronica Briseno of Marquette, 8-3.
Other Deacon competitors included junior Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ), who lost the 'A' singles fifth-place match to Jodi Kenoyer of Richmond, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, NC) finished third in the 'B' singles draw, winning her semifinal consolation match in straight sets over Anabelle Espinosa of Marquette (6-1, 6-3).
Haus and Houston also teamed up in the 'B' doubles draw, finishing fifth place in the bracket. The duo played an additional match on Sunday, defeating Kylie Wallis and Yasmin Fisher of Rice, 8-6.
Next up for the Demon Deacon women is the ITA Riviera All-American championships, held in Pacific Palisades, Calif. from Oct. 17-22. Bielik and Bergman have both automatically qualified for the main draw in both singles and doubles, while Haus will play in qualifying matches to earn a spot in the main draw. The event is the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam.
