CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia baseball team hosted the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the final game of a weekend series this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Field. The Demon Deacons won Friday's game by the score of 4-0, before the Cavaliers recorded a 10-9 come-from-behind victory in Saturday's matchup. This afternoon however, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and cruised to a 13-5 victory to win two of the three games in the weekend series.
WFU's Matt Price (3-5, four runs, RBI) broke open a 0-0 tie game in the third inning when he hit a solo homerun off UVa's Kevin Shrout to make it 1-0 Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons scored another run in the fourth inning when Chase Voshell (2-4, two RBI, two runs) singled to begin the inning and later scored on a RBI-sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of teammate Danny Borrell (2-2, four RBI, run), making it a 2-0 contest.
Wake Forest quickly extended its 2-0 lead to 6-0 by posting four runs in the fifth inning. Price and Jamie Athas both reached base off of two Virginia errors to start the fifth inning, and each base runner came around to score runs before Borrell hit a two-run homerun to right field to give the Demon Deacons a 6-0 lead.
Trailing by six runs for the second consecutive game, the Cavaliers tried to make a rally and scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning when Ben Himes (1-3, RBI, run) crushed his third homerun of the season to deep right field, pulling Virginia within five runs at 6-1.
However, Wake Forest answered UVa's run with three more runs of its own in the sixth inning when Dan Conway (1-3, RBI, run) hit a solo homerun to left field before Cory Sullivan (1-5, three RBI, run) hit a two-run homerun of his own to right field to give the Demon Deacons a 9-1 lead.
Virginia cut Wake Forest's lead to 9-2 when Tim LaVigne (2-5, two runs, RBI) hit his second homerun of the season - a shot to left field. But the Demon Deacons answered UVa's run once again, this time in the eighth inning with four more runs to pull out to a commanding 13-2 lead.
The Cavaliers came right back in the bottom of the eighth inning and started to make a late run at the Demon Deacons and got things started off with a Hunter Wyant (2-5, run) singled to center field. After Luis Giraldo (1-4, run) walked, LaVigne hit a single to left-center field to load the bases for UVa. Two batters later, Mark Rueffert (1-3, RBI) hit a RBI-single to right-center field to score Wyant, making it a 13-3 game. Michael Floyd (RBI) then hit into a fielder's choice that scored Giraldo to make it 13-4 contest before David Stone (2-5, RBI) singled to score LaVigne, pulling UVa withing eight runs at 13-5.
But that would be all the scoring the Demon Deacons would allow as Wake Forest held on for the 13-5 victory.
Starting pitcher Matt Briggs (1-2) recorded his first win of the season as a pitcher for the Demon Deacons after throwing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three batters. Shrout (3-1) was dealt his first loss of the year after also throwing six innings for UVa. He allowed nine runs (five earned) on nine hits and struckout three batters as well.
With the loss, Virginia falls to 13-14-1 overall, 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest improves to 20-9 overall, 5-4 in the ACC with the win.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, March 28th when they travel to Richmond, Va. to face the Richmond Spiders at 3:00 p.m.
