WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the UNC Charlotte 49ers played to a 14-14 tie in a game that was called because of darkness after 10 innings at Hooks Stadium on Tuesday.
The 49ers jumped out to a 9-0 lead early with seven runs in the second inning and one in each of the next two innings. Wake came back and took the lead, scoring 11 runs in the next three innings, making the score 11-9. UNC Charlotte scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 11-11. The game headed into extra innings with the score still 11-11. UNC Charlotte scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning. Wake, however came back with three runs in its half of the inning. Chase Voshell drove in the first run and Danny Borrell drove in the last two. Right fielder Ryan Johnson was at the plate with runners on first and second when the game was called.
For Wake Forest, Voshell went 4-for-6 to lead the way at the plate. Borrell, Dan Conway and Jason Aquilante each got two hits for the Deacs.
Wake's record moves to 20-9-1 with the tie, while UNC Charlotte is now 17-11-1. Wake will play again on Wednesday when they host the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
