DURHAM, N.C. - No. 22 Wake Forest battled back from a one-run deficit with three runs over two innings to defeat Duke 3-2 Friday at Jack Coombs Field. The victory improved Wake Forest to 22-9-1 overall and 6-4 in the ACC while Duke dropped to 11-22 and 2-5 in the ACC.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jeff Becker walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wes Goodner's RBI single drove him in to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead which lasted into the seventh inning.
Wake Forest tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Chase Voshell after two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The Demon Deacons went up 3-1 in the eighth on Dan Conway's solo home run and Cory Sullivan's RBI bunt single.
Duke's J.D. Alleva put the Blue Devils within striking distance with a solo home run to rightfield in the eighth inning. Wake Forest's Scott Siemon (7-1) earned the victory after throwing a complete game 9.0 innings. He struck out five batters and allowed seven Duke hits and two runs.
Duke's Patrick Hannaway struck a season-high seven batters while throwing a season-high 6.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run. The Blue Devils' Brad DuPree (0-3) took the loss after throwing 1.1 innings.
Game two of the three-game series is Saturday at 1 p.m. Game three is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field.
