DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest jumped out a 6-0 third inning lead and held off a rally from Duke Sunday to defeat the Blue Devils 8-6 at Jack Coombs Field. With the loss, Duke drops to 11-24 overall and 2-7 in the ACC while No. 22 Wake Forest improves to 24-9-1 overall and 8-4 in the ACC. of a Duke error and passed ball.
Duke was led at the plate by Kevin Kelly who finished 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Brian Patrick (2-5), Larry Broadway (2-5, RBI) and Scott Grossi (2-4, RBI, run) each collected two hits apiece.
Conway led Wake Forest at the plate with with a 2-5, four RBI performance.
Duke starter Kevin Perry (3-3) took the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils. He gave up four hits and four runs in his 2.0 innings pitched. Larry Broadway went the final 5.0 innings for the Blue Devils. The freshman southpaw struck out four batters and allowed only three hits and one run in his 5.0 innings after moving over from first base.
Wake Forest starter Matt Briggs (2-2) came away with the win after going 3.2 innings while Ryan Braun picked up his first save of the year after throwing the final 2.1 innings.
Wake Forest will travel to Campbell on Tuesday night and East Tennessee State on Wednesday.
