RICHMOND, Va. -- Wake Forest's Jenny Everett had two goals and three assists and led a three-goal outburst late in the first half as the Demon Deacons topped Virginia Commonwealth 7-0 in field hockey Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
Wake Forest got off to an early 1-0 lead when junior Carrie Neidhart connected on a penalty corner less than four minutes after the opening whistle, but VCU held the powerful Demon Deacon attack in check until junior Jemima Cameron's goal off a corner with 8:49 remaining before halftime. Everett assisted on both goals and gave Wake a 3-0 advantage when she beat Rams' goalkeeper Anne Forrester (Norfolk, Va./Maury) one minute later. The All-American then fed teammate Kelly Doton at the 30:54 mark for her third assist of the first half, giving the Demon Deacons a 4-0 cushion at intermission. Everett scored her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty stroke with just over 23 minutes left to play.
Wake Forest, which reached the final eight of the 1999 NCAA tournament, outshot the Rams 25-4 in improving to 5-0 on the season Forrester made nine saves in the cage for VCU, which lost its second game in as many days and slipped to 1-2 overall.
The Rams open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule Wednesday night when they travel to James Madison. VCU will next play at home on Sunday, September 16 against Appalachian State. Game time is 1 p.m.
