The Deacons, who lost their first match of the season yesterday to a nationally ranked Pepperdine team, came back to defeat the Owls by game scores of 15-9, 15-9, 15-6. Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya led the Deacons with 12 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips and junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson each added seven kills. Phillips registered a match-high 27 assists and served up a team-high three aces.
Maso de Moya recorded five kills in the first and third games as the Deacs jumped out to an early 10-2 lead over the Owls in game one. Wake sprinted to a 12-4 lead in the second game before closing the game out 15-9. In the third game, the Deacons led 7-0 before giving up a point to Florida Atlantic, but the Deacs increased their lead to 12-1 as they wrapped up the match in three games.
Wake held the Owls to no blocks and a .017 hitting percentage. Ashley Bodily led Florida Atlantic with 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Danyielle Smith recorded 22 assists and a match-high four service aces.
Wake Forest will take on its first two ACC opponents in Maryland and Virginia in its next two outings. The Deacs will travel to College Park, MD for a September 19 match-up with the Terps, and will visit the Cavaliers September 22. Wake returns home October 4 for a conference showdown with Georgia Tech.
