ST. LOUIS - The Wake Forest field hockey team extended its winning streak to three games with a blistering 6-0 win over Northwestern on the final day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in St. Louis.
The Deacons opened up the scoring in the first half when junior Carrie Neidhardt took passes from senior Jenny Everett and sophomore Maria Whitehead and put the ball past Northwestern goalkeeper Jessica Yates for a 1-0 Wake Forest lead. The Wildcats held the Deacs at bay until the second half, when Wake exploded for five more goals.
Junior forward Jemima Cameron scored her first goal of the game early in the second half. She was assisted by Everett and Whitehead. Everett, a senior forward/midfielder, scored the Deacons third goal unassisted before teaming with Maria Whitehead once again to feed Cameron for the team's fourth goal.
Two freshmen scored the final two goals for Wake Forest. Liz Hill took a cross from Jenny Everett to score her first collegiate goal. Hill then assisted Emily Ruth as Ruth shot the ball past Yates for the final margin of victory.
Wake registered 12 shots on the day and had nine penalty corners. Northwestern recorded seven penalty corners. Deacon goalkeeper Jaime Tressler saved six balls before giving way to freshman Katie Ridd with 10 minutes remaining. Ridd chipped in with two saves for the Deacs.
"It'll be nice to get back home. I thought we played really well in the first half yesterday (against Iowa)," head coach Jen Averill said. "Today we looked a little flat and fatigued. Yesterday's game took its toll on us, but we really responded in the second half today.
Our bench really came in and did a nice job. I was proud of the way the girls played. We fought hard. Whenever you go on the road and come home with two wins, that's something positive."
The Deacons improve their record to 3-0 on the season and will host Sacred Heart at Kentner Stadium on September 8 at 4:00 pm.
