COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland women's basketball team (11-6, 2-4 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak when they downed Wake Forest (9-8, 2-5 ACC) 71-61 on Thursday night in Cole Field House.
Wake Forest jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first seven minutes, paced by seven points from senior forward Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick (Waynesville, N.C.). The Terrapins began chipping away at the deficit and brought the margin to a six-point Wake Forest advantage after a three-point basket from freshman point guard Kiki Wimbush (Suitland, Md.). Wake's Heather Miller (Bassett, Va.) took the lead back to nine less than 30 seconds later, matching Wimbush's three-pointer before both teams fell into a three-minute scoring drought.
Freshman guard Sarah Jenkins (Bowie, Md.) nailed two free throws to get the Terps going again, but it was Wake Forest that would enter the half up 26-19 after nine first-half points from Mock Kirkpatrick and eight from Eafton Hill (Boone, N.C.) for the Deacs.
Maryland turned up the defensive heat in the second half, putting on the pressure and forcing Wake Forest into 12 second-half turnovers. The Terps found their rhythm on the offensive end as well, going on a 21-4 run over the course of seven minutes to stretch the lead to a 47-36 Maryland advantage at the 9:34 mark.
Wake Forest cut the lead to as little as seven, but could not handle Maryland's pressure down the strecth. The Terps showcased a balanced scoring effort, with four players in double figures. Wimbush led Maryland with 17 points and seven assists, while March? Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) finished with 13, and Jenkins netted a career-high 11 points. Junior transfer Jamecca Harrell added 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for her fifth double-double of the year. For Wake Forest, Mock Kirkpatrick and Hill ended up with 20 and 16, respectively. Mock Kirkpatrick also finished the night with a double-double, after a 10-rebound performance in a losing effort.
Maryland's next action comes on the road at Georgia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. The game will be Maryland's first of four televised contests this season, and can be seen live on Home Team Sports. Wake Forest's next game is a non-conference tilt on Monday Jan. 22 with Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m.
