BOONE, N.C. - Wake Forest broke open a close game with four goals in a four minute span to begin the second half en route to a 6-0 field hockey victory over Appalachian in a frigid Kidd Brewer Stadium on Wednesday night.
Leading 1-0 at the break, top-ranked Wake Forest received its first goal of the second half at the 37:08 mark as Heather Aughinbaugh drilled a shot past the Appalachian goalkeeper to extend the lead to 2-0. Wake Forest continued to apply pressure on the Appalachian defense and struck again at the 38:07 mark as Jemima Cameron slipped a shot into the cage via a pass from Aughinbaugh.
Wake Forest didn't stop pressing as it cashed in on a shot from Marlena Reese to extend the lead to 4-0 at 38:23. The Demon Deacon lead was stretched to 5-0 when Emily Ruth put away a shot at the 41:01 mark. Cameron finished the scoring for Wake Forest at 55:02 to provide the 6-0 final.
Deacon goalkeepers Katie Ridd and Merrilee Robbins combined for three saves in the shutout, Wake Forest's fourth of the season.
