CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Wake Forest volleyball upended North Carolina in four games Friday night in Carmichael. The Tar Heels came into the match ranked no. 1 in the ACC. After losing the first game, the Deacons game back to win three straight to take the match. Wake improves to 14-8 overall and 7-5 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in the ACC.
In the first game, strong hitting by Laura Greene helped lead the Tar Heels to a 30-28 victory despite strong play by Katy de Roeck, Trina Maso de Moya and Margaret Davidson.
The Deacs rebounded back to take the second game 30-25 with leadership from Maso de Moya. She registered five kills, five service aces and seven digs for the game.
In the third game, sophomore Sara Beth DeLisle came off the bench to provide four digs and kills for Wake. As well Amber Rieg grabbed four digs of her own to lead Wake to a 31-29 win.
Wake finally took the match after winning the fourth game 30-22. The Deacs momentum and undying enthusiasm carried them for the win. Maso de Moya posted 21 kills, 29 digs and eight service aces for the night. Rieg tallied a season high 12 digs. Setter Ashlee Phillips led the Deacon offense with 49 assists and 18 digs of her own. Wake as a team was one dig shy of a 100 tonight.
Head coach Valorie Baker was pleased with the team's defense and the contributions made off of the bench to upend the top-ranked Tar Heels.
"Defense made a big difference tonight. Trina had 29 digs, Katy had 16 and Amber recorded 12. Three kids recording that many digs generates that much more offense for us," said Baker. "We had exceptional play off of the bench. DeLisle came in and did a tremendous job at the L2 position. Tiller came in at a key time and slowed down Nicole Reis. That gave us the momentum to play with more intensity."
Wake will take this momentum into its next match at home against the Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in Reynolds Gymnasium.
