Men's Tennis Successful In Singles Play At All-Americans

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA / LAFAYETTE, LA - The Wake Forest men's tennis team caught fire in singles play in the second day of action at two different fall tournaments as the Demon Deacons had four singles players advance to the fourth round at the ITA All-American Championships Prequalifying Tournament at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, GA. Two other Deacs stormed through consolation singles rounds at the Cingular Wireless Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Cajun Courts in Lafayette, LA.
David Bere and Mike Murray both picked up wins in the first round of singles play at the ITA All-American Championships and then two more wins on Saturday to advance to the fourth round. Bere, a junior from Midland, MI, topped Evan Fowler from South Alabama 7-5, 6-2 in the first round, battled past Jacob Martin of TCU 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the second round and then defeated Wisconsin's Scott Rutherford 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the third round. Murray, a junior from St. Petersburg, FL, made quick work of Pepe Mendoza from TCU 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, got past Stuart Waters of Iowa 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 in the second round and then battled back to win his third round matchup with Arizona's Whi Kim 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. David Loewenthal, a sophomore from Franklin Lakes, NJ, topped Chase Exon from Cal 6-3, 6-1 in the second round and then smoked Pepperdine's Brian Wright 6-1, 6-1 in the third round. Trent Brendon, a junior from Victorville, CA, fought off Chris Wettengel of Minnesota 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the second round and then defeated Alistair Jenkin from Texas 6-4, 6-0 in the third round.
In doubles action Brendon and Loewenthal picked up an 8-5 first round victory over a Tulsa team and then beat a duo from Florida 8-6 in the second round. The Deacon tandem will face a squad from Minnesota on Sunday. Bere and Justin Kaufmann stumbled in their first round matchup, losing 8-4 to a pair from South Alabama.
Meanwhile, at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Derrick Spice and Rick Phillipp both won three singles matches to win their respective consolation brackets. Spice, a freshman from North Olmsted, OH, had a 1-0 lead on Michael Chkroun of New Orleans, before Chkroun retired. In the next round Spice took out David Corrie from Texas-Arlington 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 and then defeated Sebastian Lacatelli from New Orleans 6-3, 6-2 to capture the Consolation Flight A Championship. Phillipp, a junior from Fort Wayne, IN, had a first-round bye and then made quick work of Louisiana-Monroe's Greg Bienvenu 6-1, 6-0 and Tulane's Arty Ishii 6-0, 6-1 to take the Consolation Flight B Championship. Andrew Simpson fell short against Johann van der Weshuizen of Louisiana-Lafayette in the second round of the Singles Flight A, 4-6, 6-4, 2-0 (ret.). Mirko Ivanda lost to New Orleans' Gui Dumas 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Singles Flight B. Ivanda teamed up with Phillipp in the Double Flight B where they beat a team from New Orleans 8-6 in the semifinals and then lost 8-2 to in the finals to Jansson and Gneiting of USM. Simpson and Spice were eliminated from the Doubles Flight A.
