WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest volleyball team was defeated 3-2 by Duke Saturday night in the Demon Deacons' final regular season home match at Reynolds Gym. Following a ceremony honoring the accomplishments of the three Wake Forest seniors, Margaret Davidson, Amber Rieg and Trina Maso de Moya, the Demon Deacons took the ACC's top team, Duke, to the full five games before succumbing to the Blue Devils.
"We were presented with a great opportunity to beat the number one ranked team," said Wake Forest head coach Valorie Baker. "We showed signs of playing well at times, but we were not consistent enough in our overall effort to beat a team that played at the level that they (Duke) were at tonight."
Wake Forest won the first game 30-16, notching a .485 attack percentage while holding Duke to a .121 attack percentage. The teams reversed their fortunes in the second game as the Blue Devils won 30-18, firing at a .429 clip, while the Demon Deacons cooled to a .056 attack percentage. Wake Forest took the third game 30-24, but Duke came back and tied up the match with a 30-21 game four victory, sending the match to a fifth game - which the Blue Devils captured 15-6.
Maso de Moya led the Demon Deacons with 18 kills, 19 digs, one service ace and five total blocks. Davidson tallied 15 kills on 31 tries and junior setter Ashlee Phillips had 53 assists.
Duke improves to 21-3 overall and 13-3 in the ACC. Wake Forest falls to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, Nov. 11, when they travel to Columbia, SC to take on South Carolina at 3:00 p.m.
