Wake Forest vs. Elon Nov. 17, 2001 - Postgame Quotes

Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser "I would like to give credit to Elon - those guys kept playing and there were a couple of times we could have spurred it, but they kept playing. We found out some things today. We need some practice, but I am beginning to feel like Norman Dale in Hoosiers, the boys and I are starting to learn about each other. I wish we had more time to practice. It's like the Robert Frost poem, 'we've got miles to go before we sleep.' We'll play the hand we've been dealt in New York, and I'm sure we'll play well. "

On Darius Songaila: "They didn't have anybody to guard Darius Songaila. Sometimes the only one who can guard Darius Songaila is Darius Songaila. Collectively, we're turning the ball over a lot. Darius played well tonight, with 27 points, but he can play better - he knows he can play better.

On Vytas Danelius: "With all of our freshmen, the bad thing is that when you play Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, you don't get a lot of time to practice, you don't get a lot of time to watch videotape. With freshmen, there's going to be a lot of on the job training.

Wake Forest's Darius Songaila "Our mindset was to win the game. It was important for us to come out and win. Elon played a good game - they were undersized and we took advantage of it. We're not perfect, but we're getting better. We are learning a lot. We need to cut down on turnovers. Elon did a good job penetrating and making us help on defense, and that let them get offensive boards."

Wake Forest's Vytas Danelius "It's hard to say anything about my role - I do my best, I do my task just to play and play hard. It is a really high level, very competitive. I guess I've been more comfortable as we play more games."

Elon Coach Mark Simons

On Darius Songaila: "I hope we don't have to play anyone like him the rest of the year. He's a monster. He's the most physical player in the ACC. We wanted to use quickness to keep away from him, and we didn't. He was very, very effective. As far as Songaila goes, he's a very, very good player. His three-pointer really hurt us because we finally felt like we were getting some momentum. He was hurting us so badly both inside and outside."

On the WF press: "It was feast or famine for us. It was a learning experience for me as a coach. We sometimes get a little anxious and turn the ball over. We did a much better job in the second half on holding the ball and getting boards.

On the team: "We beat a good A&T team on Friday, but it didn't look like we were coached. We used energy. Today, we tried to use a half court game, but we couldn't get it going. Wake Forest probably will be a Top 25 team on Monday. It was good for our program to play here. The kids were ready to play. We were fatigued from Friday, but we didn't have to come from Arkansas either. Our goal is to get into the (NCAA) Tourney. Our kids listen and work and you can't ask for any more than that.
