Tennis Players Continue Competition at National Indoors

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Wake Forest's Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.) posted two victories on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the singles bracket at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Bielik and teammate Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) have also advanced to the finals in the doubles bracket after a semifinal victory on Friday evening.
Bielik, ranked No. 1 nationally and seeded third in this weekend's bracket, defeated Stanford's Gabriela Lastra, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in second round action on Friday morning. She then made quick work of her quarterfinal match, defeating Sarah Borwell of Houston, 6-3, 6-2. Bielik will face fifth-seeded Kelly McCain of Duke in a 12 noon semifinal match on Saturday.
The Deacon doubles team of Bergman and Bielik won their semifinal match on Friday evening, defeating Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette of Stanford, 8-5. They will face the winner of the Stanford-UCLA semifinal in the title match on Saturday afternoon. The WFU tandem, ranked second nationally, will be gunning for their second national doubles title, as they won the National Clay Court Championships last fall.
On the men's side of the bracket, Deacon sophomore David Loewenthal (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) won his second round match on Friday, defeating Robert Gutsafsson of Middle Tennessee, 6-4, 7-6 (4). In his quarterfinal match, Loewenthal took fifth-seeded Al Garland of Pepperdine to three sets, but fell 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
Bergman, a senior, competed in consolation singles on Friday, defeating Erin Burdette of Stanford 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-1 in the first round. Playing another three-set match, Bergman then lost in the quarterfinals to Mira Radu of Mississippi, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
Semifinals in singles as well as the doubles finals take place on Saturday. The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships wraps up on Sunday with the title match in singles.
