
Demon Deacons Defeat Old Dominion, 13-8

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 24th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated Old Dominion 13-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. Sophomore Ryan Braun made the start and earned his second win of the season.
Braun, who had been sidelined since February 27 with a shoulder injury, pitched four innings on a pitch count and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five.
Catcher Stephen Ghutzman was the offensive star of the game. The sophomore from Spring, Texas, had a career-high four hits, including three doubles to tie a school record held by seven other players. Ghutzman's three runs batted in were also a career-high.
The game was not without impressive performances at the plate. Senior Carlos Brackley doubled, tripled and homered in the game. Jamie D'Antona's three-run homer in the seventh inning put the game away for the Demon Deacons. Cory Sullivan and Jamie Athas combined for four hits and three stolen bases.
Wake Forest built a commanding 8-0 lead as the Deacons had nine hits after three innings. Old Dominion slowly clawed back into the game with two in the fourth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh to make it a 10-8 contest.
But Sullivan and Josh Hansen got aboard before D'Antona slammed his seventh home run of the season over the wall in right-center field. The blast gave Wake Forest a comfortable five-run lead heading into the final two innings. Ben Elbe and Dave Bush pitched the final two frames, closing the door on the Monarchs.
The Demon Deacons improve to 19-7 on the season and will travel to Tallahassee for a three-game weekend series at 11th-ranked Florida State. Friday?s game begins at 7:00 p.m. and sophomore Ben Clayton will get the start. All three games can be heard live on the internet by following the links on www.wakeforestsports.com.
