HIGH POINT, N.C. - The 23th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team was upset at High Point University on Wednesday afternoon by a 3-1 score. Freshman catcher Jayson Hoffman drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to win the game for the Panthers.
Freshman Adam Hanson (4-3) took the loss for the Demon Deacons despite pitching four innings of near-perfect baseball. The Wake Forest closer got an out at second base on a failed sacrifice bunt before surrendering the game-winning home run.
The Demon Deacons totaled just five hits on the afternoon, two of which belonged to senior All-American Cory Sullivan. Freshman Doug Riepe got his first career start and drove in the only Wake Forest run, a bloop single to right field that scored Jamie D?Antona in the fourth.
Sophomore Ben Clayton made the start for Wake Forest. He threw five innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
The Demon Deacons had won ninth of their last ten and re-entered the top 25 on Monday after winning two of three games at third-ranked Georgia Tech over the weekend.
