WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Virginia with a 4-1 victory on a Sunday afternoon of milestones at Hooks Stadium. Head coach George Greer earned his 600th career win and closer Dave Bush picked up his 17th career save to tie as the school's all-time saves leader.
Senior Cory Sullivan struck out a career-high six batters and scattered eight hits over seven innings to remain perfect of the season at 3-0. Sullivan helped his own cause in the seventh by bunting his way on base. He stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error from third base. The run gave Sullivan an insurance run, more than he would need.
After seven innings, Sullivan gave way to Bush who retired all six batters he faced in two innings with a pair of strikeouts. It was Bush's third save of the week, eighth of the season and 17th of his career to put him into a tie with Keith Ksansnak for first place on the all-time saves chart at Wake Forest.
The Deacons got on the board in the first inning and third as Jamie D'Antona singled in Nick Blue both times. Wake Forest tacked a run in the seventh and again in the eighth on Matt Price's RBI single to left. D'Antona and Price completed productive weekends at the plate. D'Antona was 8-for-13 in the series with a home run and six driven in. Price finished 8-for-12 with a home run, four RBI and two stolen bases.
Greer is Wake Forest's winningest coach of all-time regardless of >sport. The coach has a career record of 600-427-7 through 14 years with the Demon Deacons and six years at Davidson. Greer has another milestone well within reach, needing just six more wins for his 500th win at Wake Forest.
"Any success we've had is a tribute to the coaches and players we've had here. It's not so much a personal accomplishment but a staff and team accomplishment," Greer said.
Sunday's win improves Wake Forest's record in the conference to 9-6 and 23-10 overall.
Wake Forest will embark on its longest road swing of the season playing its next seven games away from Hooks Stadium. The Deacons travel to Virginia Tech on Tuesday and play Appalachian State on Wednesday in Hickory before going to Atlanta to face third-ranked Georgia Tech.
