Deacons Place Second In Bryan National Collegiate

Browns Summit, NC - The 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team wrapped up play at the 2001 Bryan National Collegiate golf tournament in second place with a three-round team score of 879. The Deacs trailed leader Duke by 23 strokes.
Senior Marta Prieto came back on the second and third days to lead the Deacons with a one-under 215. Prieto finished fourth after carding a four-under 68 on the second 18 - her lowest score of the season. She finished the final round with a one-under 71 to complete her only sub-par tournament finish of the 2000-01 season. Sophomore Nuria Clau also performed strongly, finishing the tournament in fifth place with a three-round 216. Clau shot a three-under 69 in the final round, and finished the first round with an even-par 72. Sophomore Maria Beautell and freshman Deb Means each tied for 33rd place with 54-hole scores of 227. Beautell finished the final round with a seven-over 79 after shooting a 72 and a 76 on days one and two, respectively. Means, who finished with the best scores of her career, carded a 77 in Sunday's round. Junior Katie Brenny rounded out the Deacon five, finishing the event strongly with a four-over 76. She tied for 52nd place with a 233. After carding an 84 on the first 18 holes, Brenny came back with a 74 and 75 in the final two rounds. Junior Veronica Prado-Lacoste, playing as an individual in the Bryan for the second consecutive season, also wrapped up the tournament with a strong round. She finished in a tie for 80th place with a three-round score of 248 after shooting a 76 on Sunday.
Duke took team honors at the event with a three-round team score of 856. Duke's Candy Hannemann earned individual honors, shooting a three-day score of 209, including a four-under 68 in the final round.
The Deacons will take a weekend off before heading to the ACC Championships April 20-22 in Orlando, FL at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
