FORT MILL, S.C. -Catcher Tony Richie went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run to help No. 1 Florida State (43-16) cruise past No. 3 Wake Forest (40-16), 15-2 in the first semifinal game of the ACC Baseball Tournament Saturday.
The Seminoles now await the winner of this afternoon's No. 4 Georgia Tec-No. 8 NC State game. The winner of that game will play Florida State beginning at 8 p.m.
The 8 p.m. game will be televised live on Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports South and the Sunshine Network.
The loss was Wake Forest's first loss of the 2001 ACC Tournament. The Deacs' next game will be Sunday at 1 p.m. The Deacons will face the winner of tonight's 8 o'clock game for the ACC Tournament Championship.
Richie entered the tournament hitting .247, but has been 10-for-17 (.588) in Fort Mill. In addition to his three hits, the freshman from Jacksonville, Fla. scored three runs and had two RBIs.
Another freshman that stood out for Mike Martin's club was left handed starter Trent Peterson. Peterson (5-1), pitching his first career complete game, kept the Deacons off balance all day. The Tallahassee native allowed just two runs and five hits, while striking out eight.
The Seminoles scored early and often in recording their fifth straight win over Wake Forest dating back to the 2000 regular season.
Florida State scored two runs in the first inning and followed that inning with a pair of three-run innings in the second and third.
By the end of the third inning, Wake Forest had already used two pitchers in relief of starter Josh Bartlett. Bartlett (3-2) took the loss after lasting only two innings and giving up five earned runs and five hits.
Ryan Lewis entered the game in the third inning for the Deacs and was able to cool the Florida State bats temporarily, shutting out the Seminoles in innings four thru six.
The Seminole drought ended in the top of the seventh when Lewis gave up four runs before leaving the game after being struck by a line drive up the middle off the bat of first baseman Ryan Barthelemy.
Florida State pounded five Wake Forest pitchers for 19 hits total, which included six doubles. This performance followed a 17-hit outing in a 5-4 win over Clemson Friday by the Seminoles.
Notes: Florida State is now 5-3 in ACC Tournament play versus Wake Forest ... the six doubles by FSU was one two-bagger shy of tying the ACC Tournament single game record set by NC State in 1987 versus Clemson ... Wake Forest has guaranteed itself its third ACC Tournament Championship game appearance in the last four years ... Wake won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
