Loewenthal Wins ITA Summer Circuit

WASHINGTON, DC - David Loewenthal, a sophomore on the Wake Forest men's tennis team, won the singles championship July 21 at the Week 3 East Circuit at Georgetown University - a part of the 2001 ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit presented by USTA. There are four weeks of four circuits and the winners of each will advance to the ITA National Summer Championships, August 11-15 in Bloomington, Ind. With his championship, Loewenthal automatically advances to the National Summer Championships at Indiana University.
As the top seed in the 64 draw singles tournament, Loewenthal got a bye to the second round, where he defeated Peter Jarjes of Hofstra 6-2, 6-1. In the third round Loewenthal beat Tushar Garg from American 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals where he trumped fifth seeded Marius Weigert 6-3, 6-3. Loewenthal topped seventh seeded Sean Kelleher of William & Mary 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance to the finals where he dispatched Miami's Tarik El-Bassiouni 6-1, 7-5.
Loewenthal, who hails from Franklin Lakes, N.J., led the Demon Deacons with 29 singles wins this past spring as true freshman. Playing mostly at the number three position, Loewenthal posted a 29-11 overall singles record. His steady play helped Wake Forest to a 14-11 overall record and a 5-3 ACC mark, finishing fourth in the conference. The Demon Deacons advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Championship, returned to the NCAA Tournament and a finished the season with a final ranking of 43rd in the nation.
