East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team defeated its second ranked opponent in as many days as it topped sixth-ranked Wake Forest, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium on the MSU campus. MSU defeated No. 1 Old Dominion 3-2 in overtime Saturday. With the loss, the Deacons drop to 1-1 on the season.
Michigan State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. At the 33:16 mark, Judith van Haeringen blasted a shot from about 20 yards out past Wake Forest goalie Katie Ridd on a pass from Lisa Mitchell off a penalty corner attempt. Julia Adams also assisted on the goal.
The Spartans held onto the 1-0 lead almost the entire game, but the Demon Deacons put the pressure on MSU's defense as the ball was in Michigan State's end for most of the second half. With about five minutes left in the game, Maureen Halstead broke through the Deacon blockade and led a breakaway, passing the ball to Sophie Rosmalen who tapped it in to seal the game for the Spartans.
MSU goalie Lauren Hess recorded her first career shutout, posting six saves in the winning effort. Ridd made seven stops for Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons return home to host James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the 2001 Kentner Stadium opener. Head coach Jen Averill will be gunning for her 100th victory at Wake Forest when the Deacons take on the Dukes.
