BOONE, NC - The Wake Forest cross country teams got their seasons started Friday evening with a running start at Appalachian State's Mountaineer Open. The Demon Deacon men's team won the 8,000-Meter Run with 23 points and the women's squad took third in the 5,000-Meter Run with 87 points. Garick Hill, a senior from Advance, NC, was the individual champion in the men's race, finishing first with a time of 24:50.00. Risa Rutland, a junior from Sugarland, TX led the women's team, taking sixth place with a time of 18:27.10.

Wake Forest's men's squad, which returned all their top runners from last year's squad that finished 4th at the ACC Championships and 18th at the NCAA Championships, put five runners in the top 10 at the Greenway Trail Course on Appalachian State's Farm Fields. The Demon Deacon women's team, which took 3rd at last season's ACC Championships and 29th at the NCAA Championships, but lost top runner Sara Day, placed two in the top 10 and the young team shows promise.

Both Demon Deacon cross country teams will return to action Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host their only home event of the season, the Wake Forest Open on their campus cross country trail, Water Tower Field. Wake Forest will compete against 2000 NCAA qualifiers North Carolina and Georgetown. The men's race will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the women will run at 10:15 a.m.
