WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Radford tonight at Kentner Stadium by a score of 9-0, improving their record to 3-2 (0-0 ACC). With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 2-4 (1-0 NorPac).
The Deacs were in control from the outset, as senior midfielder Jemima Cameron drilled one into the net from 20 yards out less than five minutes into the game. The Deacons struck three times in the next four minutes, as sophomore forward Kelly Doton twice fought through traffic around the net and scored two goals 1:49 apart, putting the Deacs ahead, 3-0. With 23:49 remaining in the first half, senior forward Jennie Shelton tallied for Wake Forest, but Radford's defense held for the remainder of the half and the teams went into halftime with the Deacs on top by a score of 4-0.
The Deacons retained command in the second half when, just four minutes in, sophomore Lucy Shaw scored off a rebound. At 17:33 of the second half, freshman Kelly Dostal took a feed from Cameron and put it in the net. Just over three minutes later, she notched another goal, this one unassisted. Sophomores Katie Ackerman and Allyson Hudson put the finishing touches on the game, each scoring in the last ten minutes, to give Wake Forest the 9-0 victory.
Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill was encouraged by her team's play. "You never know what to expect from Radford. They're a feisty group and I thought it was imperative that we come out early and execute the way we're capable of executing and we did a great job of that," Averill said.
Radford was unable to quell the Wake Forest attack, despite 27 saves by senior goalie Brooke Peterson. Wake Forest goalkeepers Katie Ridd and Merrilee Robbins needed to make just two saves in the win.
The seventh-ranked Demon Deacons will return to action on Saturday, as they travel to College Park to take on number three Maryland in their first ACC contest of the year. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
